Now that fireworks stands are open, Astoria Fire & Rescue wants the community to remember “SAFETY” this season – purchase only legal fireworks and use them with caution. Although fireworks sold at local stands are legal in Oregon, it does not mean they are less dangerous than illegal fireworks. We urge people to pay special attention to safety guidelines and avoid illegal devices to help ensure a safe Independence Day holiday.
Oregon law bans fireworks that fly into the air (bottle rockets and roman candles), explode (firecrackers and M80s), and travel more than six feet horizontally and/or 12 inches vertically from the point of ignition. Many fireworks purchased by mail order, in the State of Washington, or at Native American reservations are illegal in our state.
Under Oregon law, officials may seize illegal fireworks and offenders may be fined up to $500 per violation or possibly arrested. Misuse of fireworks or any fireworks causing damage carries a liability for the offender, who may be required to pay for fire or other damage. Parents are liable for fireworks damage caused by their children.
Astoria Fire & Rescue reminds you to celebrate safely this year by following these safety tips:
· Always read and follow the label directions.
· Buy from reliable sellers.
· Light only one firework at a time.
· Adults should light or handle fireworks and supervise children and teens at all times when fireworks are being used.
· Never re-light a “dud” firework (wait 15 or 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.)
· Store fireworks, matches, and lighters out of sight and reach of children.
· Never give fireworks to small children.
· Use fireworks outdoors on a paved surface, away from cars, houses, and vegetation.
· Have a hose or bucket of water nearby to douse misfired and spent fireworks, and to extinguish potential fires.
· Never point or throw fireworks at buildings, cars, or people.
· Never alter fireworks or make your own. Homemade explosives can be deadly!
· Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
· Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
· Stay away from illegal explosives.
